Thibodaux, La.-based Rouses Markets will be donating $50,000 for a new interactive grocery exhibit at the Bayou Country Children’s Museum. The museum installation, called Rouses Farmers Market, will feature Cajun recipes and mini grocery carts for the children to fill with seafood, fruits and vegetables indigenous to the bayou region along with goodies found in Rouses Markets.
“This is a fun, hands-on exhibit that teaches children about food and where it comes from,” said Donny Rouse of Rouses Markets. “Buying local and education are two core values for Rouses, so this is a perfect fit.”
As a new parent, Rouse feels the museum is an important part of early childhood education.
“It’s great to have a children’s museum of this caliber right here in Thibodaux,” he added.
Christy Naquin, executive director of the museum, said Rouses was a natural partner.
“When we sought a sponsor for the Farmer’s Market, we knew we wanted Rouses,” she said.
The Bayou Country Children’s Museum began construction in November on the 12,700-s.f. facility. The museum will house 50 unique exhibits highlighting the industry, agriculture, environment and Cajun culture of south Louisiana. It also will incorporate party rooms, meeting space, a small theater, gift shop and picnic areas.
The museum is located at 211 Rue Betancourt, near Nicholls State University. It will serve children age 2-12 from within an eight-parish area including Assumption, Ascension, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, Terrebonne and beyond. It will act as an extension of the classroom since the exhibits will correspond to the grade level expectations for area schools.
