Supervalu Inc. said Wednesday that it’s laying off as many as 2,500 employees from its Albertsons stores in California and Nevada, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports.

The layoffs will affect 247 Albertsons stores, Eden Prairie-Minn.-based Supervalu said in a news release. They will begin the week of June 17 and be completed by the end of the month.

Supervalu said it will lay off between 2,200 and 2,500 employees.

“The change is expected to directly impact a small number of positions at any specific store location,” Supervalu said in the release.

Albertsons is the largest retail chain in Supervalu’s family of grocery stores

“A decision of this nature is never easy, but it is the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business and accelerate our turnaround,” Albertsons President Dan Sanders said in a statement. “Our goal is to more effectively serve the marketplace by scheduling associates more appropriately to serve customers at the times they shop.”

Last month, Supervalu said 120 people would lose their jobs as it closes an Ohio distribution center. And, in February, the company said it was eliminating 800 jobs from its corporate and regional offices nationwide.
