Meijer Opens New Marketplace Store In Chicago’s Berwyn Community

Nearly one year after launching its first new format store in the Chicago market, Meijer Marketplace, Meijer delivers another new store to its Chicago-area customers as it officially cuts the ribbon on Meijer Marketplace Berwyn, located in Cermak Plaza.

“We are very pleased to continue our growth in Chicagoland,” said Hank Meijer, co-chairman of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer. “Our team has worked very hard to get our new Berwyn store ready, and we’re excited to bring the Meijer difference to customers in Berwyn and the surrounding communities.”

Meijer kicked-off its grand opening celebration this morning with a ribbon-cutting event at 7 a.m. That was followed by remarks by Meijer officials and local dignitaries, along with the presentation of a check for $15,000 to the Christian Life Center food pantry and $10,000 to Berwyn Main Street, which is a comprehensive community revitalization program that promotes the historic preservation and economic development of traditional business districts.

“We are proud to welcome Meijer to our community,” said Mayor Robert J. Lovero. “Meijer is one of the key new businesses in Berwyn that is helping to lead the charge in the economic re-development of the near-west suburbs. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with them.”

At more than 91,000 s.f., Meijer Marketplace Berwyn will offer competitive prices that customers have come to expect, featuring national and Meijer own brand grocery items, along with a full-service pharmacy offering a variety of national and Meijer brand health and beauty products, according to a company news release.

Meijer team members have worked to ensure the new store has the benefits of larger Meijer stores, in essence offering a “mini” supercenter concept. This includes more than 600 quality varieties of fresh produce including Hispanic produce such as nopalitos, tomatillos and chayote. The meat department offers neighborhood butcher shop service with custom cuts of high quality meats. The Meijer Marketplace bakery carries fresh bread baked four times a day, European cookies and custom decorated cakes. The new store also carries many local brands such as Vienna, Jays and Papa Charlie’s as well as Hispanic brands such as Cacique, LaLa and Jarritos providing a new shopping option for the ethnically-diverse community nearby.

In the general merchandise area, the store will feature key categories such as seasonal items, toys, home, kitchen and bath items and a pet department, with numerous national brand products throughout the aisles and the full-service pharmacy will be stocked with Meijer and national brand health and beauty items as well as offering Meijer’s free antibiotics, pre-natal and diabetes prescription programs with a prescription.

Meijer opened its first Chicago-area store in Bolingbrook in 1999. With the addition of the Berwyn store, Meijer now has 15 stores in the Chicago area ranging in size from full supercenters to the smaller Marketplace concepts. Meijer employs more than 3,500 team members in the Chicago area, with more than 180 new jobs created by the opening of the new Berwyn Marketplace store.
