Spartan Stores has promoted Jerry Jones to SVP of human resources. Jones has served as VP of human resources at Spartan Stores since June 1, 2009, and is responsible for administering the policies and practices for 8,700 employees throughout Michigan.
“Jerry’s leadership of the human resources team has made a direct impact in the growth, diversity and satisfaction of our associates in every area of the company,” said Dennis Eidson, president and CEO of Spartan Stores. “Jerry provides both a strategic vision for the organization as well as a team-building environment for associate growth and development.”
Jones has more than 30 years grocery industry management experience, including 13 years as the head of human resources for Jitney Jungle, an operator of 198 supermarkets in the Southeast United States. In his role as SVP of human resources, Jones’ responsibilities involved 17,000 employees in six states. Also at Jitney, Jones served as SVP of operations responsible for supermarkets under three formats, conventional supermarkets, combination food and drug supermarkets and discount supermarkets. Throughout his grocery industry career, Jones has managed all formats including upscale operations, small rural stores and big box discount stores, and fuel operations in front of all types of store formats.
Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from High Point University in High Point, N.C.
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spartan Stores is the nation’s 10th largest grocery distributor with 1.4 million s.f. of warehouse, distribution and office space located in Grand Rapids.
