Diaz Supermarkets Owners Accused Of $35M Fraud In Miami-Dade

The owners of Diaz Supermarkets in Miami-Dade County have been accused of fraudulent transactions totaling $35 million, according to The Miami Herald.

The South Florida Business Journal says John Diaz, 45, and his wife, Mercedes Avila-Diaz, 44, were arrested Friday. Diaz faces charges of money laundering, organized scheme to defraud and multiple money service business violations. He and Avila-Diaz also are facing charges of workers’ compensation fraud.

Authorities allege there was movement of drug money through the supermarkets’ check-cashing and money-wiring services, according to reports.

Diaz Supermarkets operates four stores in Miami-Dade and the markets are well known in the Naranja and Homestead areas.
