Longtime Calif. Food Broker Cleland Passes Away At 73

Mr. Robert “Bruce” Cleland, 73, of Glendora, Calif., died May 20 at home with his loving family by his side.

Mr. Cleland worked in the grocery industry for most of his life, first in his father’s store in Raton, N.M., then in California at Buy-Fair Markets. He began a more than 40-year career as a food broker with the Bradshaw-Wells Co. in 1968 and, in 2002, opened his own company—CMJ Sales & Marketing in Brea, Calif.

Mr. Cleland was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Raton to Hugh and Jony Cleland, moving to California in 1958 after his high school graduation. He loved to hunt, fish and tinker in his garage. He served as senior warden at Grace Episcopal Church, was a coach at Glendora National Little League, Glendora All American Football and in the Glendora basketball program.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cleland is preceded in death by his brothers Dick and Roger Cleland; sister Sue Havenar; and granddaughter Emily Armstrong. He is survived by his wife Karen; children Don (Sarah) Cleland and Deana (Kelly) Armstrong; grandchildren Lauren (Sean Sheehan), Alex, Nathan, Christian, Adam and Tyler Armstrong, Jacob and Jared Cleland, and Cynthia and Bekah Ritnimit; great-granddaughter Isobel Sheehan; and a great-grandson due in July.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Grace Episcopal Church, 555 E. Mountain View, Glendora, CA 91741. A reception will follow in Baxter Hall.
