WGA Announces Recipients Of 2013 Mary Macey Scholarships

The Women Grocers of America (WGA) has named the recipients of the 2013 Mary Macey Scholarship Fund. Kathleen McDonald of Dan’s Food Market in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, and Shannon Rosenblum of Brookshire Grocery Co. in Tyler, Texas, each will receive a $1,500 scholarship to further their education and careers in the independent sector of the food retailing industry.

“This year, the WGA board of directors selected two exceptional recipients of the 2013 Mary Macey Scholarship Award, but the choice wasn’t easy,” said Denise Beckman, president of WGA. “We received four times as many applications as last year, and the students were impressive in accomplishments, passion for the industry and representation of the industry from single store to multi-state retailers. WGA remains committed to recruiting and retaining the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs with an emphasis on young women.”

The scholarship was started in honor and remembrance of WGA’s first president, Mary Macey.

Kathleen McDonald of is a junior at the University of Utah majoring in business administration with a minor in nutrition. She currently works in customer service and as a floral assistant at Dan’s Food Market and has been with the company for three years. She hopes to open her own organic/healthy foods store where she can help people with health issues such as Celiac disease and diabetes.

Shannon Rosenblum of is finishing her associate’s degree in business administration at Tyler Junior College. She is a part-time student and works full time for the Brookshire Grocery Co. on the DSD Data Integrity Team, in addition to raising her children. She has been with the company for seven years and plans to transfer to the University of Texas at Tyler for her bachelor’s degree in business administration upon receiving her associate’s degree. Rosenblum says she loves the grocery business and plans to use her higher education to further her career in the independent sector.
