GE Rolls Out New Open Deck LED Solution For Food Retail

GE Lighting says grocery and convenience store owners now have an extra-appetizing lighting solution for open deck cases that delivers a quick payback without sacrificing performance: GE’s Immersion RH30 LED lighting system.

GE-LEDCaseLight2GE’s new Immersion LED lighting system attracts customers by making food packages shine with crisp LED light, the company says. The refrigerated display lighting transforms horizontal cases housing fresh meat, packaged dairy and deli items, as well as service cases at butcher and seafood counters.

Making the switch from fluorescent lighting to a long-life LED solution will save grocers on energy, maintenance, material costs and the hassle and cost of disposing of fluorescent lamps, GE says. Depending on local electricity rates and the hours of operation, many retailers are experiencing a less-than-three-year payback on their retail display lighting projects.

“GE’s latest LED solution for open deck case lighting gives grocers a quick return on investment and vivid, long-lasting visual performance,” says Kyle Mooney, global product manager for GE Lighting. “Unlike conventional light sources, LED lamps tend not to ‘fail’ suddenly. Rather, an LED’s efficiency can be measured by lumen maintenance, and GE’s LED lighting solutions meet industry standards for lumen ratings and energy efficiency.”

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has created L70 as a standard for determining an LED product’s life rating. An LED lamp rated under this standard can be expected to maintain at least 70 percent of initial lumen output for its rated life. The L70 maintenance rating is the most commonly used because the human eye cannot detect a significant difference in light output until it has been reduced by 30 percent.

Delivering excellent light uniformity, the Immersion RH30 LED lighting system features GE’s Visual Comfort Lens to diffuse ultra-efficient LED technology in a way that removes “pinpricks” and “hot spots” from food packages—putting the spotlight on merchandise and encouraging customers to reach in and buy, according to GE. Its slimmer profile hides better behind the case, putting the focus on the food. Plus, grocers can position the adjustable LED lights to their desired angle, directing bright, crisp light straight at food packaging or the price tags.

The energy-efficient Immersion RH30 LED refrigerated display lighting solution replaces traditional T12 high output, T8 and T5 high output linear fluorescent lamps in horizontal refrigerated display cases, producing 75-87 percent energy savings while reducing maintenance costs.

GE says it continues to innovate since developing its first-generation LED solution for refrigerated display lighting in 2004, offering a complete refrigerated display case solution that pairs both canopy and undershelf applications to deliver uniform lighting to all areas of the case—including to poorly lit items on the bottom shelf.

GE’s Immersion RH30 LED solution is available in 36-inch and 48-inch lengths, and in warm and cool color temperatures (3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K).
