Harris Teeter and vendor Titan Farms donated approximately 57,000 lbs. of peaches to the Second Harvest Food Banks in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, N.C., this past week to help feed people struggling with hunger in the local communities. This donation is part of the retailer’s participation in the inaugural “Peaches with A Purpose” program sponsored by peach grower Titan Farms.

Ridge Spring, S.C.-based Titan Farms, the largest peach grower on the east coast, created the Peaches with a Purpose program to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the U.S.

“We are very pleased to offer a program that will help our retail partners give back to their local communities,” said Chalmers Carr, president of Titan Farms. “We would love to make this an annual campaign that will get stronger each year.”

The program spanned four weeks in July and August and encompassed 150 Harris Teeter stores in North and South Carolina. For the total amount of peaches purchased during the campaign period, Harris Teeter in turn donated a percentage back to the food bank. The total donation is in excess of 57,000 lbs. of peaches. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina in Winston-Salem and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte will each benefit from the program.

“We are excited to be the first retailer to participate in Titan Farms’ Peaches with a Purpose program,” said Catherine Becker, communication manager for Harris Teeter. “Fresh produce is scarce in food banks across the country, and we are happy to be able to contribute nutritious items to those in need.”

“On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of children, seniors and families who struggle daily with hunger in our region, we want to thank Harris Teeter and their partner Titan Farms for their commitment to help end hunger,” said Kay Carter, executive director for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. “Produce is an item that those living in poverty can least afford but need as part of a healthy diet. We are very grateful for this support.”

Harris Teeter Inc., with headquarters in Matthews, N.C., employs approximately 25,000 associates and operates stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia.
