NGA Show Bigger Than Ever With Record Attendance

The National Grocers Association (NGA) Show has kicked off in a big way: more than 3,000 attendees are buzzing around a show floor that’s been sold out since November. This year, the 350 exhibitors accompany several pavilions, which house even more exhibitors. The Global Marketing Development Center (GMDC) has more than 80 exhibitors at its pavilion alone, according to Greg Ferrara, spokesperson for the NGA Show.

“I think what we’re hearing from retailers is that they’re excited to be here as well. They’re excited about all the great things going on at NGA, and they’re looking for things they can take back to their companies and implement,” Ferrara told The Shelby Report’s Geoff Welch.

This year also marks the second year the NGA Show has co-located with the Independent Grocers Association (IGA) World Rally event. According to Ferrara, IGA brought more than 400 retailers from 14 different countries—who are co-registered for the NGA Show as well.

Big names in the industry are giving nuggets of advice through more than 40 educational sessions, but Ferrara says the most anticipated event hasn’t happened yet. The Best Bagger competition is set for today. This year, the competition includes baggers from more than 25 states and, like last year’s competition, the winner gets to compete a second time against their congressman in Washington, D.C.

“What we’re really excited about this year is a fairly large national media presence,” Ferrara said, noting attention from the “Today Show,” ABC News and the “Late Show With David Letterman,” which is poised to showcase the winner of the Best Bagger competition.

Aside from the Best Bagger excitement, Ferrara says the NGA is releasing the results of its Economic Impact study, which The Shelby Report helped sponsor.

“We’re really excited to be able to publicly release those numbers and release that story that tells how strong the independent grocer is in our industry,” he said.
