Gov. Walker Attends UNFI Groundbreaking For Second Wisconsin DC

Gov. Scott Walker attended the June 20 groundbreaking of United Natural Foods Inc.’s (UNFI) new distribution center in Pierce County, Wis., a $37 million project expected to create about 300 jobs.

The 300,000-s.f. facility located in Prescott, about 30 miles southeast of the Twin Cities, will be the company’s second facility in Wisconsin. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2015. UNFI, a leading distributor of natural, organic and specialty foods in North America, also has a distribution center and warehouse in Racine County that just opened this spring.

“UNFI is an industry leader and a rapidly growing company that just posted double-digit increases over last year in both sales and income,” said Gov. Walker. “The jobs created by this investment in northwestern Wisconsin are good news for the region, and yet another example of the growing number of companies who see significant advantages to expanding their operations in Wisconsin.”

Between the company’s Prescott and Racine facilities, UNFI expects to bring more than 500 new jobs to the state.

“We are pleased to break ground on our facility in Prescott,” said Sean Griffin, UNFI’s group president. “UNFI believes Prescott is the optimal location for us to better service our customers and increase our operational efficiencies while reducing our costs and emissions. We look forward to growing with this great community.”

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has authorized up to $3.5 million in state tax credits for the Prescott project over a four-year period. The actual amount of tax credits will be contingent upon the number of jobs created during that period.

UNFI, a Providence, R.I.-based company, carries and distributes more than 65,000 products to more than 31,000 customer locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company serves a wide variety of retail formats, including conventional supermarket chains, natural product superstores, independent retail operators and the food service channel.
