Jewel-Osco Opening Five Chicagoland Stores Today

‘Grand reopening’ celebrations planned at 14 remodeled locations tomorrow

Five new Jewel-Osco stores are opening today at 5 p.m. with “celebratory galas” across Chicago. Town officials and community members from each respective neighborhood as well as Jewel-Osco executives and associates are expected to attend the events that will feature live music, sampling and other entertainment.

New stores opening today are located at 424 W. Division and 1763 Howard St. in Chicago; 3243 S. 115th St. in Merrionette Park; 800 NW Highway in Fox River Grove; and 345 S. Rand Rd. in Lake Zurich. The five new stores created more than 1,500 jobs.

Jewel-Osco said the stores were designed to offer customers a new experience in fresh products, including an expanded variety of produce, meat and seafood.

Select locations will offer an oil and honey bar; gourmet bulk nuts, candy, teas and spices; and freshly made caramel corn and caramel apples, among other indulgences.

The Division store will feature a fudge shop, popcorn bar and smoothies. The Howard Street store has a community room open for the public to use as a meeting space.

The company also will debut across all the locations its “Jewel-Osco Signature Items,” showcasing a selection of goods from each fresh department that are specially made every day. In the bakery, these items include guaranteed hot from 4-7 p.m. French bread, 18-count cookies and custom cakes. Deli offerings include fried chicken and store baked carving turkey breast.

The meat market offers USDA Choice Steakhouse Choice beef, with full-service custom cuts by a Jewel-Osco butcher upon request, in addition to boneless, skinless chicken breasts that are hand trimmed and all natural. Other market items include fresh ground beef sirloin 96 percent lean pub burgers, sausage and never-frozen 6-oz. salmon.

The produce department features fresh cut fruits and vegetables offered in many different sizes and varieties, and cored pineapples for the same price as a whole pineapple. Fresh-made guacamole is available as are many varieties of yogurt and fresh berries for yogurt parfaits, another store-made produce specialty. Jewel-Osco also offers more than 100 varieties of locally farmed roses.

“Our business has picked up momentum over the last several months and we have no intention of slowing down,” said Jewel-Osco President Shane Sampson. “With over 30,000 team members strong, Jewel-Osco has a deep roster of talented individuals that drive our company to be the No. 1 grocery retailer in Chicagoland. We’re getting back to doing what’s right for our customers, our team and the community. Our mission is to support the neighborhoods that we serve by giving them the prices they deserve, the goods and services they want and the highest standard of service.”

On Wednesday, an additional 14 store locations where remodels have been completed will host grand reopening events. Virtually every department received updates, the company said. Equipped with new self-service salad bars and new juice bars, the remodeled stores also will feature the Jewel Signature Items. The bakeries now will offer gourmet desserts and a variety of fresh baked breads, muffins and bagels. With expanded prepared hot and cold food sections, the delis now have carving stations and offer Dietz & Watson premium sandwiches and wraps made fresh every day. The refreshed meat and seafood departments include live lobster tanks, hand trimmed as well as natural and antibiotic-free chicken and fresh seafood that can be seasoned and steamed at the stores for no additional cost.

Jewel-Osco also is making nearly $40,000 in grant donations to 36 organizations across Chicagoland, including schools, food pantries and other nonprofit organizations, to mark the openings.

Remodeled stores set to open at 8 a.m. Wednesday include former Dominick’s locations at 1340 S Canal St. and 2550 N. Clybourn Ave. in Chicago; at 1340 Patriot Blvd. in Glenview; and at 14200 S. Bell Rd. in Homer Glen.
