NatureSweet Tomatoes is bringing back its Glorys Homegrown Tomato & Chef’s Challenge tour for 2014. The contests will put green thumbs and cooking skills to the test with four events Aug. 9-Sept. 6.

This year, the tour kicks off in Indianapolis, marking the 53rd challenge conducted to date. Since 2003, NatureSweet has run the Homegrown Tomato Challenge in cities nationwide, finding garden-grown tomatoes of all shapes, sizes and varieties along the way.

In 2010, the Chef’s Challenge was added, opening up the contest to foodies who enjoy cooking with tomatoes.

We are thrilled to see the stellar produce and delicious dishes that our fans will bring to the table. It gives us great joy to see others who share our love of top-notch tomatoes.”

For the Glorys Homegrown Tomato Challenge, participants will bring small, medium or large tomatoes of the same variety to one of the event locations (listed below). Tomatoes will be judged by a panel consisting of local celebrities and dignitaries. Each category holds a grand prize of $2,000 for the best homegrown tomato and $200 grocery store gift cards for runners-up. Tomato entries not awarded a prize will be donated to a local food bank.

To enter the Glorys Chef’s Challenge, participants will declare their love of cooking with tomatoes in 200 words or less. Three finalists will be chosen from all entries based on creativity and originality of content submitted. One grand prize winner will be selected in every city, and each will be awarded $2,000 for the best dish. Runners-up will receive $200 grocery store gift cards.

The 2014 Glorys Homegrown Tomato & Chef’s Challenge will kick off its four-city tour in Indiana and end in Colorado. Specific locations and dates include:

  • Kroger, 8850 S. Emerson Ave., Indianapolis, Ind., 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Aug. 9. (Chef’s Challenge deadline passed July 31)
  • Price Chopper, 595 Shelburne Rd., South Burlington, Vt., 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 16. Chef’s Challenge deadline is Aug. 7.
  • Jewel, 1151 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg, Ill., 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 23. Chef’s Challenge deadline is Aug. 14.
  • King Soopers, 15051 E. 104th Ave., Commerce City, Colo., 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 6. Chef’s Challenge deadline is Aug. 21.
