Largest Donation Of Fresh Produce Expected On Sunday For Atlanta Community

Local food bank volunteers will work through the night on Sunday, Oct. 25, to “harvest” thousands of pounds of fresh fruit, vegetables and even flowers from the Georgia World Congress Center after the fresh produce industry’s largest U.S. convention and expo comes to a close. The fresh produce will be donated by exhibitors at Produce Marketing Association’s (PMA) 2015 Fresh Summit and collected by the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB).

According to Feeding America’s 2014 Hunger in America report, 1 in 7.5 people, or an estimated 755,400 people, in metro Atlanta and North Georgia turn to food pantries and meal service programs to feed themselves and their families each year. This includes more than 164,000 children and more than 64,000 seniors. The report also reveals that 80,600 people are served each week by programs supported through ACFB.

Over the past decade, PMA exhibitors have donated more than 2.9 million pounds of fresh produce to communities in need in the U.S. Last year’s donation consisted of more than 217,000 pounds of produce.
