Fareway Stores has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire the former Family Food Center located at 402 E. Main Street in Anamosa, Iowa. The grocery chain also plans to build a new store in Peosta.
Fareway says it currently is working with local officials on the details of the Family Food Center acquisition and redevelopment of the property. The company plans to transform the current 19,678-s.f. facility into a Fareway store. The remodeled facility will have new fixtures, equipment and other finishes, including a new full-service meat department.
“Many individuals are working hard to open Fareway in Anamosa as soon as possible. We appreciate our relationship with the current owners and former operators of the Family Food Center and their professionalism through our discussions,” said Fareway President and COO Frederick R. Greiner. “The Family Food Center has served area residents for decades, and we are excited about our family-owned company’s commitment to serving these same residents for many years to come.”
In Peosta, Fareway has property under contract at the intersection of Peosta Street and NICC Drive, east of an existing convenience store. Fareway and the property owner are working through details of the acquisition, while necessary documents are being prepared to be presented to local officials and residents in the near future.
Fareway intends to construct an approximately 18,000-s.f. Fareway store. When opened, it will provide area residents with Fareway’s full-service meat department; farm-fresh produce; low, competitive prices; and the highest customer service, according to the company.
“In the coming weeks, we hope to engage local officials about the construction of a new Fareway store in Peosta,” said Greiner. “The details of the plan will be vetted through a public process in the upcoming months. Although this development will take time and additional details still need to be worked through, we are very excited about the possibility of serving the city of Peosta.”
Fareway currently operates 112 stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.
