Washington, D.C., Foam Ban Takes Effect, And More…

On Jan. 1, the nation’s capital no longer allowed restaurants and other foodservice establishments to package food or beverages in polystyrene containers. The city council approved of the styrofoam ban in 2014 in a package of environmental proposals aimed at helping the Anacostia River recover its health. Nearby Montgomery County, Maryland, also enacted a limited foam container ban this year, with Prince George’s County, Maryland, to follow suit later in 2016. Some national chains such as Dunkin’ Donuts switched from foam cups and containers to those made of other materials to make it easier for locations to comply with state or local ordinances. Other localities with styrofoam bans include Seattle, San Francisco and Minneapolis. In September, a judge overturned New York City’s ban on foam containers, disagreeing with the city’s assessment that the recycling polystyrene “was neither environmentally effective nor economically feasible.”…

TravelCenters of America LLC, operator of the TA and Petro Stopping Centers travel center brands and Minit Mart convenience store brand, is kicking off the New Year by offering professional drivers helpful options for maintaining a healthier lifestyle. TravelCenters is presenting more better-for-you food offerings, fitness options and helpful information from its StayFit program to encourage drivers to get fit and stay healthy. Drivers can find a variety of StayFit items and activities throughout the travel centers, such as healthier grab-and-go snacks and beverages, including yogurt and fresh fruits and vegetables. There also are many dining options noted with the StayFit symbol on select full-service restaurant menus at participating TA and Petro locations. StayFit exercise options include fitness rooms, walking/running trails, basketball hoops and outdoor fitness areas at many locations. In addition, many sites now offer horseshoe and bean bag toss recreation options. Drivers also can purchase fitness accessories such as push-up bars, resistance bands, hand grips and workout gloves…

Chex Finer Foods’ 25th annual spring trade show for specialty and natural foods will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2-3, at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Show hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. March 2 and 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 3.
