Bipartisan Child Nutrition Bill Passes Committee, And More…

The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee’s has passed the Improving Child Nutrition Integrity and Access Act of 2016, advancing the bill to the full Senate. This bipartisan bill would reauthorize expired child nutrition programs and make it easier to serve meals to children year-round. The bill allows some states to provide summer EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards to families in hard-to-reach areas to purchase groceries. It also allows some states to use alternative methods of reaching kids when they are unable to make it to meal sites. The bill does not make cuts to SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) or other anti-poverty programs to pay for these changes…

Uber is starting a meal delivery service. Soon, residents in 10 major cities will be able to use the UberEats app to order and receive restaurant food. Uber Technologies Inc. will soon begin testing its meal delivery service in Atlanta; Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas; Chicago; Los Angeles; New York City; San Francisco; Seattle; and Washington, D.C. UberEats is the car service company’s response to other food delivery startups, such as Postmates and DoorDash. UberEats expands a lunchtime service the company started in 12 cities in 2015. UberEats will begin in locations already using its lunchtime service. The company also said drivers could choose to participate in UberEats, with delivery fees of about $5 per order, which will be shared with the driver…

Goya Foods will offer a $20,000 nationwide Culinary Arts Scholarship granted annually to four students entering their freshman year of college to obtain their first undergraduate degree in culinary arts and/or a food sciences area of study. The Culinary Arts Scholarship is available on a competitive basis to students entering an accredited two- or four-year institution. Scholarships are in the amount of $5,000 awarded per academic year starting this fall and are renewable for up to three additional years provided the student remains eligible to receive funding.
