Since 2008, Texas-based Brookshire Brothers has invited its vendors to play in the company’s two Charitable Foundation golf tournaments each year. Proceeds since the tournament’s inception have exceeded $1 million. Vendors appreciate the opportunity to network with their colleagues while raising money for nearly 20 worthy causes—all which support children and families and align with the grocer’s core values, according to Brookshire Brothers. The funds are divided based on the organizations’ needs and application requests.

The Charitable Foundation’s 2016 recipients include 15 nonprofits and three education foundations. Trustees and company executives presented more than $110,000 to the recipients on Monday at the company’s distribution center in Lufkin.

In making the presentations, Brookshire Brothers President and CEO and Charitable Foundation board member Jerry Johnson said, “These folks exist to help the hurting, enrich children’s lives through education and the arts and support health services and research. They touch the lives of thousands of our customers. It’s our privilege to help further their reach through the foundation’s support.”

 The 2016 recipients are:

• Alzheimers Association-Houston & Southeast Texas

• Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas (ADAC)

• American Cancer Society-Pineywoods Cattle Barons Gala

• Angelina Arts Alliance

• CRRC of Canyon Lake

• Court Appointed Special Advocates-CASA in the Pines

In addition to these contributions, Brookshire Brothers has a separate employee-run donations committee, which meets monthly to consider hundreds of donation requests from throughout the company’s footprint.

Those funds come from the company’s earnings.

Employee-owned Brookshire Brothers operates 111 grocery stores, convenience stores, as well as free standing pharmacy, tobacco and petro locations with another location opening in Canyon Lake next week and in Grapeland, Texas, this summer. Its market stretches east to Lake Charles, Louisiana, west to Canyon Lake, Texas, north to Whitesboro, Texas, and south to Ganado, Texas.
