Bashas’ will begin transitioning all of its private-label Bashas’-branded eggs to cage-free eggs starting this fall.
The Chandler, Arizona-based chain, which will launch its cage-free-egg changeover this November, says it will be the first mainstream grocer in Arizona to make the transition with its own brand of eggs.
“We are committed to being a good corporate citizen,” said Edward “Trey” Basha, CEO. “It’s important to us to offer local, responsibly-sourced foods at affordable prices. Bringing cage-free eggs to our customers is the right thing to do, and we are happy to be partnering with another local, family-owned business to make this happen.”
Bashas’ is teaming up with Arizona-based Hickman’s Family Farms to source its own-brand eggs.
“We are especially proud to be making this momentous transition with one of our longest-standing customers,” said Glenn Hickman, CEO of Hickman’s Family Farms, which recently announced a major cage-free expansion at its facilities in Buckeye, Arizona. “Supporting the cage-free movement means not only a high-quality egg production, but greater comfort for our hens.”
Bashas’ cage-free egg changeover is expected to be fully complete in 2017.
“Customers want more food traceability; they want to know exactly where their food is coming from,” Basha said. “We have a longstanding reputation as a company that cares about the community, and we’re always looking for new ways to better serve our customers.”
Bashas’ operates more than 130 stores in Arizona.
