Weis Markets is launching its eighth annual Paws for Pets program, a company-wide initiative that collects monetary donations, pet food and supplies for local animal shelters and rescue organizations throughout May. Weis customers also can contribute to Paws for Pets while they shop by purchasing items on shelters’ wish lists before placing them in a specially marked collection cart near checkout. Since 2008, Weis Markets has generated more than $1 million in donations for local animal shelters through its Paw for Pets program. According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumers are expected to spend an average of $172.22 this Mother’s Day, down slightly from last year’s record-high $172.63. Total spending is expected to reach $21.4 billion, with 84.4 percent of consumers surveyed planning to celebrate the holiday.
