The New Jersey Legislature has passed a 23-cent gasoline tax hike, sending the measure to Gov. Chris Christie for his signature. The legislative package includes a $16 billion deal to fund road, bridge and transit projects for eight years and increases the state’s gas tax, which has not risen since 1988, to 37.5 cents per gallon. In exchange for the higher gas tax, the package reduces the sales tax rate in phases and eliminates the estate tax, which applies to estates valued at more than $675,000.
