Greater Boston Food Bank Kicks Off Holiday Meal Drive, And More…

The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), the largest hunger-relief organization in New England, has kicked off its sixth annual Holiday Meal Drive. The fundraising effort aims to provide nutritious holiday meals to residents of eastern Massachusetts at risk of hunger—among them children, seniors, veterans, college students and working families. Walmart opened its first New Jersey training academy in Williamstown on Oct. 20, marking the company’s 25th anniversary of operations, economic growth and community support in the Garden State. Walmart’s academies are dedicated facilities located in, or adjacent to, a Walmart Supercenter where hourly supervisors and department managers will receive two weeks of hands-on training that combines both the classroom and the sales floor. Walmart plans to build approximately 200 academies in the U.S. by the end of 2017. Each academy will train associates from approximately 25 nearby stores…

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) has commented on sodium reduction guidelines to the FDA, recommending that the categories be streamlined and the timeline to meet the short-term reduction goals be extended to at least four years. GMA proposed changes to the categories to account for differing functional roles of sodium. In addition, GMA said that extending the time frame from two to at least four years will allow adequate time for reformulations as well as the time needed to transition consumers’ taste preferences to accept reduced sodium in products. GMA also recommends FDA assess the progress toward these short-term goals after five years.
