Just in time for the holidays, Dawsonville, Georgia, has gotten a new—and much bigger—Kroger store.

The supermarket chain opened a nearly 124,000-s.f. Marketplace unit Nov. 16, replacing a 71,000-s.f. Kroger store that opened in the North Georgia city in 1997 and closed Tuesday evening. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting event Wednesday morning at the new Marketplace along Highway 400 North hosted Kroger Atlanta officials, local dignitaries and customers. The Dawson County High School Tiger Pride Marching Band provided entertainment, and Kroger made several check presentations to local schools.

Jeff Wojtkowiak, VP of operations for Kroger Atlanta, said it was the largest group he’d seen for a grand opening this year.

Ed Loy, a 20-year Kroger veteran and who managed the city’s former Kroger, leads the Marketplace store, which employs 300.

In addition to a grocery department, which includes wine/beer, the new state-of-the-art facility features a drug/general merchandise area, including HBC and apparel; deli/bakery; meat/seafood with a grilling station; produce and floral; and nutrition. The store offers nearly 103,000 total SKUs and is one of the “largest stores in the Kroger fleet,” according to Wojtkowiak.

“There are some truly wonderful things that you are going to experience here in this store that you probably have not experienced if you have not been to one of our Kroger Marketplaces,” he said.

Loy agreed.

“You cannot shop this store in 10 or 15 minutes. You need two or three hours,” he told the crowd.

The store also includes a Starbucks, Baby World, household and home decor, Nature’s Market and Vitamin Shop, sushi bar, garden bar, Bistro with prepared hot and cold meals, sandwich station, Pan Asian station, hot chicken and barbecue station, free-standing cheese island—Murray’s Cheese Shop, pharmacy with drive-thru, a fuel center that opened in late October, frozen food, a wine steward station, ClickList (beginning Nov. 30), a Little Clinic, as well as a mural in the store called “Growth,” which was painted by local artist Chris Lundy.

Construction on the Kroger Marketplace Dawsonville project began on Aug. 31, 2015, and is part of Dawson County’s bustling Highway 400 corridor, which for years has boasted the popular North Georgia Premium Outlets and now is expanding further with new additions.

In addition to new retailers that will join the Kroger Marketplace-anchored shopping center, Publix opened a new 45,600-s.f. store on Oct. 13 in the new Dawson Crossroads shopping center, on the opposite side of Highway 400 from Kroger.
