AFPD Will Become Midwest Independent Retailers Association Next Year
The AFPD has hosted a gala in Michigan every year for 102 years. This year, the organization brought the celebration to the Chicago area for the first time.
“It’s all about the independent retailers. We wanted to put together a night for them to celebrate, get together and network and talk amongst each other and celebrate the prosperous independent retailers that are in the Chicago metro area and really shine a spotlight on them,” AFPD President and CEO Auday Arabo told The Shelby Report’s Geoff Welch. “This is our first year here in the Chicago metro, and we plan to continue to grow this. First year out, we have 400-plus people, a band, silent auction, gaming, prizes, photos, great food and drinks and great camaraderie.”
Arabo also said that the AFPD will change its name to better reflect the group’s mission. It will become the Midwest Independent Retailers Association (MIRA).
“With our growth into Illinois as well as our continued growth in Ohio and Michigan, we decided to move away from our old title, which is AFPD, to the new title, the Midwest Independent Retailers Association, which will take effect officially in 2019 with our new logo and new website,” Arabo said. “It’s really to showcase that we’re independents first and foremost and independent-strong.”
