NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products Group and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” are teaming with iconic ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s to introduce the new flavor entitled “Late Night Snack.” The unique new flavor features a rich vanilla bean ice cream with a salty caramel swirl and crunchy fudge covered potato chip clusters. The concoction was inspired by a “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” skit in which Fallon and house band The Roots performed an original song, “Ladysmith Snack Mambazo,” about Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Late Night Snack begins arriving in supermarkets and Ben & Jerry’s locations around the country this week.

The research and development team at Ben & Jerry’s had long considered a flavor with potato chips in some fashion. After initial talks with Fallon, who suggested fudge covered potato chips as a chunk in his flavor, the Flavor Gurus at Ben & Jerry’s knew they had to make the combination work.

In February 2010 Ben & Jerry’s pledged to convert its product line to Fair Trade certified by 2013. Fair Trade supports fair wages, a safe work environment, sustainability for the land, animal husbandry and community development for farming communities. Accordingly, Late Night Snack is made with Fair Trade vanilla in the vanilla ice cream and Fair Trade cocoa in the potato chip cluster fudge coating. NBC and Fallon have pledged their share of the proceeds to Fair Trade Universities to encourage the use of Fair Trade products on campuses around the country.

Bi-Lo supermarkets in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia now offer The Rogers Family Co.’s www.rogersfamilyco.com flagship Fairly Traded gourmet coffee brands, which help protect native rainforest, wildlife and improve the quality of life for farmers, workers and their families from Central America to Rwanda.

The 207 Bi-Lo stores in these states carry 12-oz. pre-ground bags of the San Francisco Bay and Organic Coffee Company (OCC) gourmet coffee lines, which are among the divisions/brands of the Lincoln, Calif.-based Rogers Family Co. One of the nation’s largest family-owned gourmet coffee roasters, The Rogers Family Co. produces “Responsibly Grown/Fairly Traded” premium, whole bean and pre-ground gourmet coffee and tea products available in wholesale, retail outlets and online worldwide.

The blends include Organic Coffee Co. Breakfast Blend and Java Love as well as San Francisco Bay French Roast, Colombian Supremo and Hazelnut. Other items in the Organic Coffee Co. and Black Mountain Gold coffee lines are also available in select Bi-Lo stores.

Purchases of Organic Coffee Co. and San Francisco Bay coffee support the company’s “Coffee Community Aid” program.

Community Aid establishes a fixed price for farmers based upon the farmer’s cost plus a reasonable return; pays them more than the average market price and exceeds other organizations’ standards. Community Aid also provides modern houses, medical facilities, schools and day care centers, doctors, nurses, teachers, food and clothing as well as clean drinking water.

The Rogers Family Co. spent some $1 million on Community Aid in 2010.
