Nestle Purina PetCare Co. and its wholly owned subsidiary Waggin’ Train LLC is voluntarily withdrawing its Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats sold in the U.S. until further notice.

The company is taking this action after learning this week that the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets (NYSDAM) found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in samples of Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky products. These antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China and other major countries, including European Union member states, but are not among those approved in the U.S. Antibiotics are commonly used globally, including in the U.S., when raising animals fit for human consumption. Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch products are safe to feed as directed. However, due to regulatory inconsistencies among countries, the presence of antibiotic residue is technically considered an adulteration in the U.S. This finding does not pose a safety risk to pets, according to a company news release.

New York State authorities initially requested that the company remove Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky treats from retail locations in the state of New York, which the company agreed to do. In addition, because of the differences in U.S. and Chinese regulations, Nestle Purina decided to conduct a nationwide voluntary withdrawal.

“All of us at Waggin’ Train care deeply about pets and their owners, and the quality of our products is of the utmost importance,” said Nina Leigh Krueger, president of Waggin’ Train LLC. “Waggin’ Train has served millions of pets and their owners very well. In the final analysis, our company and our loyal consumers must have total confidence in the products we sell and feed our pets. Once we understand and determine how to comply with the technicalities of different regulatory frameworks, we will work with all appropriate parties to define the best way to supply the market.”

Nestle Purina contacted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding NYSDAM’s findings. There is no indication that the trace amounts of antibiotic residue are linked to the FDA’s ongoing investigation of chicken jerky products. The trace amounts of antibiotic residue (in the parts-per-billion range) do not pose a health or pet safety risk, the news release says.

No other Purina treats or pet food products are affected by this withdrawal. In addition, Canyon Creek Ranch dog and cat foods, which are manufactured in the United States, are not included in this withdrawal.

For product refund or more information, call Nestle Purina’s office of consumer affairs at 1-800-982-0704 or go here.

Nestle Prepared Foods Co., doing business as Buitoni North America, is initiating a voluntary recall of 323 cases of Buitoni Spinach & Portobello Mushroom All Natural Ravioli with UPC code 24842-99186. It is possible that this product may instead contain a variety of Buitoni ravioli containing shrimp and lobster. Because the mislabeled product potentially could contain shrimp and lobster, and because these ingredients are allergens, Nestle is strongly advising consumers who are allergic to shellfish and who have purchased the recalled product not to consume it in order to avoid the possibility of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. Nestle asks consumers to contact it for a full refund by calling Nestle Consumer Services (8 a.m.-8 p.m., ET, Monday-Friday) directly at 800-392-3057. Consumers who may have purchased the recalled product at their local Target store should look for the manufacturing code on the right side panel of the bag. The manufacturing code of the recalled product is 225451757. Please note this is a frozen pasta only item (no sauce) and is sold in a stand-up bag, not a box. No other Buitoni products are impacted by this recall.

The affected product is packaged in an 18-oz. bag with a “best before” date of October 2013 and can be found in the freezer case only at Target retail locations throughout the U.S. (This item is sold exclusively at Target; all 323 cases were shipped only to Target stores.) On Oct. 4, one consumer in Minnesota who purchased the mislabeled product alerted Nestle to this issue. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported. Nestle issued this voluntary recall of the entire production run to ensure the safety of consumers.

Giant Food of Landover, Md., following a voluntary recall by Splendid Products, has removed from sale Daniella mangos due to possible salmonella contamination.

The following product, purchased between July 12 and Aug. 24 is included in this recall:

Daniella mangos, PLU 4959

Giant Food is aware of illnesses reported in Canada and associated with this recall. Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant Food for a full refund.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

In addition, Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets has removed all Mexico-grown mangoes—along with fresh cut fruit products containing mangoes—from its shelves due to the identification of possible salmonella contamination in other parts of the country.

“There is no evidence at this time that any products that have come through our stores were contaminated—we are simply taking every precaution in an effort to protect the welfare of our guests,” said Tommy Wilkins, director of produce procurement for United Supermarkets.

Federal health officials in Canada initially announced a recall of Mexico-grown mangoes sold in Western Canada under the Daniella brand and bearing the PLU number 4959. Other supermarket chains in the U.S. have since announced similar precautionary recalls.

In addition to the whole mangoes, United also has pulled five fresh cut fruit products, which contain mangoes and bear the Market Street label. They are:

• 10-oz. Season Blend (UPC No. 0-77815-00107-2);

• 16-oz. Season Blend (UPC No. 0-77815-00106-5);

• 10-oz. Strawberry Kiwi Mango (UPC No. 0-778915-0016-4);

• 16-oz. Strawberry Kiwi Mango (UPC No. 0-77815-00115-7); and

• 10-oz. Mango Spears (UPC No. 0-77815-00117-1).

Store guests who purchased any of the above products between Aug. 12 and Aug 28 can return the unused product to any United Supermarkets, Market Street or Amigos location for a full refund.

“We anticipate having California-grown mangoes in all our stores later this week,” Wilkins said.

BI-LO has issued an immediate voluntary recall on Southern Home® Cranberry Nut Antioxidant Blend Trail Mix sold in the 16-oz. bag with a universal bar code (UPC) of 0788003039 and a best-by date of March 12, 2013. The product is being recalled in the states of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee due to a potential, undeclared presence of soy lecithin, which is a processed soy product. The processing reduces the content of allergenic proteins; however, persons with a severe soy allergy may still have serious reactions to the reduced protein found in the soy lecithin.

The recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution for customer safety, though the company has received no reports of illness associated with product consumption. The issue was reported to BI-LO by a customer.

“We encourage consumers in possession of the recalled item to immediately discard the product or bring it back to their local BI-LO,” said Allen Reavis, BI-LO’s VP of grocery. “As part of the company’s Satisfaction Guarantee, customers who have purchased the product may visit their neighborhood store to request a full refund.”

To receive the refund, individuals must present proof of purchase through a receipt or the product packaging label.

Customers with questions about the recalled product may contact BI-LO’s consumer relations department at 1-800-862-9293.

Dale T. Smith and Sons Meat Packing, a Draper, Utah, establishment, is recalling approximately 38,200 pounds of beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reports.

The following products are subject to recall:

• Various weight combo bins of Boneless Beef “50/50,” “85/15,” “90/10,” “93/07″ or “95/05″ produced on Aug. 7, 2012.

• Various weight boxes of primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef produced on Aug. 7, 2012.

Each box bears a label with the identifying package date of “08/07/2012″ as well as the establishment number “EST. 4975″ inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products subject to recall were distributed to wholesale and retail establishments in California and Salt Lake City, Utah. It is important to note that the products were destined for further processing and may not bear “EST. 4975″ on the products available for direct consumer purchase. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS’ website at here.

The problem was discovered through lab testing conducted by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, which confirmed positive results for E. coli O157:H7, and may have occurred as a result of a refrigeration malfunction. The company is recalling all beef products produced on Aug. 7, 2012, because of a strong potential for cross contamination during production. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees. The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.

LLC, following a recall by Costa Fruit & Produce, has removed from sale Calico Bean Salad, sold on the salad bar, due to a possible health risk of listeria monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported to date. Customers who have purchased the product between July 18 and Jul 26 should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Stop & Shop for a full refund.

Listeria is a common organism found in nature. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

Consumers in Massachusetts looking for additional information on the recall may call Costa Fruit & Produce at 1-800-322-1374; all other consumers may call 1-800-343-0836 or visit Costa Fruit & Produce’s website at www.freshideas.com.

Cargill Beef, a business unit of Wichita-based Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., announces an immediate Class I voluntary recall of approximately 29,339 lbs. of 85-percent-lean, fresh, ground beef produced at the company’s Wyalusing, Penn., facility on May 25, 2012, due to possible contamination from Salmonella Enteritidis.

The ground beef involved was repackaged for sale to consumers by Cargill’s customers. For a list of packages associated with this recall, consumers should refer to the USDA recall web site at: www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/index.asp.

Cargill is initiating this recall as a result of its own investigation and information provided by federal health and regulatory agencies.

USDA has confirmed that the strain of Salmonella Enteritidis associated with the ground beef recall is not antibiotic resistant. There are more than 2,400 strains of naturally and randomly occurring Salmonella found throughout nature.

“Food borne illnesses are unfortunate and we are sorry for anyone who became sick from eating ground beef we may have produced,” said John Keating, president of Cargill Beef. “Ensuring our beef products are safe is our highest priority and an investigation is underway to determine the source of Salmonella in the animals we purchased for harvest and any actions necessary to prevent this from recurring.”
