Big Y’s Meriden Store to Open

Big Y Supermarkets is preparing to open a Meriden, Conn., store that will employ about 150 at 533 South Broad St., space that was formerly a Shop Rite Supermarket.

The 55,000-s.f. store cost $3 million to renovate the Springfield grocery chain told the Hartford Business Journal.

Opening day is Aug. 25.

Among its amenities will be an eat-in café and a pharmacy.

Big Y has 30 Connecticut stores.

Recently, Lowe’s closed due to poor sales its three-year-old Meriden home improvement store at 1201 E. Main St., idling 94 workers.
