Myers Group to Open IGA in Downtown Tacoma

“Our locations are in tight-knit communities where an independent grocer can come in and meet the needs of an underserved area

IGA on Aug. 31 announced that Tyler Myers, president of Whidbey Island, Wash.-based The Myers Group, will open his newest IGA store, Tacoma City Grocer IGA, in Tacoma, Wash.’s Pacific Plaza, on Sept. 7. The store, which is located in a former parking garage that was redeveloped into an environmentally friendly office and retail space, will be the only full-service grocery store in Tacoma’s downtown core. Myers is the owner of four other IGA stores in Washington, including Kress IGA, which opened in 2008 as downtown Seattle’s only full-service supermarket.

According to Myers, Tacoma was a natural choice for the company’s newest IGA. “Our locations are in tight-knit communities where an independent grocer can come in and meet the needs of an underserved area,” Myers said.

Myers says Tacoma City Grocer IGA will cater to office workers, residents, students and visitors in the downtown Tacoma area. The 16,600-s.f. store will feature groceries, a large produce department, meats, service deli, baked goods, organic coffee espresso bar, health and beauty aids, beer and wine, and catering services. Parking will also be available.

Myers says he hopes his store will encourage additional retailers to move into the downtown area. “We really believe that the time is right for an IGA store in Tacoma’s downtown core.” Myers said in a press release. “More and more people are choosing Tacoma as a place to live, work and shop. We’ll be focused on nurturing our Tacoma community, just as we do with the other IGA communities we serve.”
