Raley’s Closing Two California Stores

West Sacramento-based Raley’s plans to close two northern California stores, including one in Elk Grove, reports The Sacramento Bee.

John Segale, a Raley’s spokesman, told the Bee that the Bel Air store in Elk Grove employs 81; the Raley’s in Modesto has 76 workers. Segale said all employees at those stores had been mailed letters informing them of the closures and potential layoffs. Segale said some employees “will be eligible to transfer to other stores,” according to the Bee. He said more senior employees will receive first priority to displace less senior workers at other stores.

In November, Raley’s announced that it would close its North Highlands Raley’s store at 7477 Watt Ave., near Antelope Road. But, in December, Raley’s said it would convert the store into a Food Source outlet.

Food Source is the Raley’s discount warehouse brand.

Segale told the Bee earlier this week that the company looked at that option for the Elk Grove Bel Air and Modesto Raley’s outlets, but determined that the competitive environment in both locales made conversion unworkable.
