The Natural Grocers store in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, won Tom’s of Maine’s “Garbage to Green” promotion, a contest encouraging each of the chain’s 90 locations to reuse empty Tom’s of Maine products and reduce the amount of waste sent to local landfills. Participants created original Tom’s of Maine end cap displays incorporating the empty natural care products as upcycled decorations.

Recycling company TerraCycle and Tom’s of Maine are awarding a TerraCycle “Garden Bundle” to the Steamboat Springs store for having the most creative display. The bundle includes recycled plastic lumber for garden beds, watering cans and a selection of TerraCycle garden fertilizer.

Runners-up were stores in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Helena, Montana; and Durango, Colorado.

In partnership with TerraCycle, Tom’s of Maine sponsors a recycling program called the Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Brigade to reduce the waste of their products. Through this program, individuals can recycle their natural care products such as toothpaste tubes, soap packaging and deodorant containers. For every unit of waste recycled, collectors earn points to be used toward a charity donation for the nonprofit of their choice.

TerraCycle recycles the collected waste into new plastic products such as park benches and picnic tables.
