U.S. Senate GMO Bill Advances But July 1 Deadline Looms, And More…

The U.S. Senate moved towards a bipartisan agreement on nationwide labeling on food products containing genetically modified organisms GMO on June 23. The agreement received praise from the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association but needs full support of the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives and President Barack Obama. The Vermont Retail and Grocers Association’s Board of Directors has named Erin Sigrist as president-elect of the statewide advocacy group. Sigrist, who joined the association in June 2015 as VP, will succeed Jim Harrison when he retires at the end of 2016. “Erin brings the right mix of skills to this role. Her experience in advocacy combined with her passion and commitment to the mission of the association and businesses in Vermont will serve VRGA well,” said Todd Keyworth of Harborside Harvest Market and VRGA board chair. “She will build on the solid foundation built by Jim and ably lead the association into the future.”…

The Manomet Grocery Stewardship Certification program in Brunswick, Maine, has promoted Catrina Damrell to field manager. Damrell will be responsible for managing all activities that occur at GSC participant grocery stores, from managing client relations and project delivery; delivering trainings; performing grocery store sustainability assessments; and ensuring quality data reporting and analysis.
