Safeway opened a new store in San Jose, California, at 1489 Bird Avenue in the Willow Glen Village Shopping Center, on Nov. 9. Robert Garza serves as the store director.

The new store is the 13th Safeway location in San Jose and the fourth new store to open in the Bay Area this year. The grocer’s other recent openings include Fairmont Shopping Center, Pacifica; The Orchards, Walnut Creek; and The Shops at the Ridge, Oakland.

Pleasanton-based Safeway says it continues to add thousands of jobs each year in Northern California, and the new Willow Glen store brings an estimated 100 new jobs to San Jose.

“We are excited for this opportunity to open a new store in the Willow Glen neighborhood and bring new jobs to the community,” said Tom Schwilke, president of Safeway Northern California.

Highlights of the new Willow Glen Safeway

• Safeway says it offers thousands of local items throughout the store. These products are marked with a “Local” tag on the shelf so they are easy to find. The company partners with local produce growers, such as Cal-Organic Farms, and carry a broad selection across the entire store, including local favorites like Clover Stornetta Dairy Farms from Petaluma, free range Rocky Chicken from Sonoma County and Three Twins Ice Cream also from Petaluma.

• Safeway offers more than 150 fresh organic produce items. It says it also has thousands of organic choices for customers throughout the store, including hundreds of products from the Safeway exclusive USDA-certified organic brand O Organics.

• The grocer’s full-service butcher block features a variety of USDA Choice quality beef cuts, a more premium cut of meat. It’s perfectly aged, guaranteed tender and has more marbling for juiciness and flavor, according to Safeway, which has butchers on hand to discuss custom cuts, cooking techniques and who can cut and prepare anything to order.

 • Safeway offers an extensive line of Boar’s Head premium deli meat and cheeses as well as a range of freshly prepared meals, including whole roasted chickens, fresh hand-battered fried chicken and fresh sushi. Deli staff will make made-to-order sandwiches using freshly baked bread. Safeway also has ready-to-serve options ranging from hot or cold soup, green salads and grab-and-go meals.

The wine selection includes a variety of local options from the South Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains. The store offers an assortment of liquor, as well as craft and locally brewed beers. Shoppers who purchase any six bottles of wine and/or liquor will save an additional 10 percent every day.

• An assortment of fresh, colorful flowers, blooming plants and home décor items are available, with in-store floral designers to assist customers.

• Safeway’s grocery delivery program offers one-hour delivery windows, a “Shop By History” feature that saves all previously purchased items for easy repeat purchasing, and free delivery on the first order.

Safeway operates more than 270 stores in Northern California, Nevada and Hawaii and is a division of Albertsons Cos.
