Giant Food, Safeway Workers Vote To Ratify Union Contracts

UFCW Local 400 members working at Giant and Safeway stores throughout the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area have voted to ratify new union contracts.

A statement issued by Local 400 said, “We didn’t get everything we wanted, but both contracts include several key improvements over our previous collective bargaining agreements, including higher starting pay; more frequent wage progression increases; wage progression increases by months of service, instead of by number of hours worked; no cost increase to employee health insurance; and a plan to secure our pensions.”

For the past 40 years, Giant and Safeway have jointly negotiated union contracts, but this year the companies negotiated separately.

A statement issued by Giant Food said, “Giant Food of Landover (announces) the ratification of a new labor contract that guarantees nearly 17,000 associates will remain among the highest compensated grocery workers in the Baltimore-Washington area. Our goal throughout negotiations was to reach an agreement that ensures our associates continue to be among the highest compensated grocery workers in the Baltimore-Washington area, while also positioning Giant Food to remain competitive in a challenging marketplace. We are pleased the contract achieves this goal and recognizes the outstanding contributions and hard work of our associates.”
