In the wake of the second hurricane to hit the U.S. in as many weeks, Ahold USA’s Stop & Shop, Giant Food of Landover and Giant Food Stores of Carlisle banners will donate $250,000 to help with relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Irma. This donation will be made to the American Red Cross through Ahold USA’s Our Family Foundation.

This amount is above Ahold’s recent $250,000 donation to Hurricane Harvey relief.

“We’ve been touched to see both companies and individuals across the U.S. come together to support victims of the recent hurricanes, and hope our contributions will help ease the stress and pain of families struggling to get back on their feet during these trying times,” said Kevin Holt, Ahold USA COO.

In other relief efforts, Weis Markets and its customers are donating $250,000 to the American Red Cross’s hurricane relief efforts.

“We are grateful to our customers for their generosity during a national crisis and know their donations will help the American Red Cross’s urgent relief work in Texas and Louisiana, and we’re extremely proud of our associates who enthusiastically supported the campaign, generating more than $223,000 in customer donations in seven days,” said Weis Markets’ COO Kurt Schertle.

Weis associates raised the customer donations during the first week of their annual Fight Hunger campaign by giving customers the option to round up their orders or to purchase $1, $4 or $10 vouchers to be donated to American Red Cross’s Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana. The $223,000 raised from customer donations will be complemented by a $27,000 corporate donation from Weis Markets to total $250,000.

“Given the urgent need, we are designating our corporate donation to relief efforts in Texas, Louisiana, Florida and other parts of the South that were affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma,” Schertle said.

CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation announced a $125,000 donation in cash and in-kind product donations to organizations helping with relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Irma. The CVS Health Foundation is making a$50,000 donation to the Florida Disaster Fund. As it did with Hurricane Harvey, the foundation also will match colleague donations to the CVS Health Employee Relief Fund, up to $25,000. Additionally, the company has donated more than $25,000 worth of water to the American Red Cross.

Kontos Foods, a Paterson, New Jersey-based manufacturer and distributor of traditional artisan breads and Mediterranean specialty foods, is coordinating two separate efforts to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey in southeast Texas. It has teamed up with business customer Zoe’s Kitchen to deliver food aid to victims in storm-ravaged areas in and around Houston. Zoe’s Kitchen Fresh Made Mediterranean, a fast-casual restaurant chain headquartered in Plano, Texas, will help with distribution of breads, working through the American Red Cross. Kontos will be supplying 100 cases of its 6-inch Pocket-Less Pita, as well as 120 cases of 8-inch Pocket Pita, enough for many thousands of servings.

In addition, Kontos is pairing up with the Texas Chefs Association, a chapter of the American Culinary Federation, to supply food to the Southeast Texas Food Bank in Beaumont Texas, another area hit by severe flooding. Kontos will be donating 120 cases of 8-inch Pocket Pita.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Texas who’ve been displaced or whose lives were upended by this horrible storm,” said Steve Kontos, VP and owner of Kontos Foods. “We know from when Hurricane Sandy hit the Tri-State area how devastating a storm like this can be and we wanted to do our small part to help relieve some of their suffering, and what better way than to team up with a couple of our key partners in the local area.”
