Just in time for the Kentucky Derby, Graeter’s Ice Cream has released its limited edition Brown Butter Bourbon Pecan flavor.
The Cincinnati family-owned craft ice cream maker, in business since 1870, discontinued its Bourbon Pecan Chocolate Chip flavor in 2018.
The Brown Butter Bourbon Pecan flavor consists of bourbon-glazed pecan pieces in brown butter bourbon ice cream.
“From a Bourbon Ball flavor available to our Louisville guests some years ago to more recent variations, a Bourbon flavor has been a guest favorite,” Tim Philpott, VP of marketing said. “After Graeter’s discontinued the Bourbon Pecan Chocolate Chip flavor in 2018, we have had quite a reaction from longtime fans of the flavor. Now, our new Brown Butter Bourbon Pecan is meant to be an even more indulgent version of the bourbon flavor with the brown butter bourbon base and special bourbon glazed pecans.”
The new flavor is available at all 55 Graeter’s scoop shops and online from the Graeter’s website. It’s one of 28 Graeter’s flavors currently available online.
Graeter’s continues to handcraft ice cream 2½ gallons at a time in a French Pot process. It is now the only commercial ice cream manufacturer in the world to use French Pot freezers.
Graeter’s two-gallon batches are the smallest in the industry. The company’s new plant in Cincinnati has 36 French Pot Freezers running day and night to keep up with demand.
The small batches are hand-swirled in the French Pots. Each batch is slowly frozen, resulting in a rich, creamy texture. And to big spoons are used to scoop the ice cream into a pint. Every day nearly 20,000 pints are hand-packed.
Graeter’s ships more than 300,000 pints annually for online mail order sales. Graeter’s also can be found in more than 6,000 grocery stores in 46 states.
The 145th Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 4, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Because Kentucky is where bourbon was created, the spirit is traditionally served at the Kentucky Derby or in celebration of the race in a variety of beverages and food flavorings.
Graeter’s has five scoop shops in the Louisville area.
