Big Y Foods Inc. has completed renovations at the Groton, Connecticut, Big Y World Class Market. This effort began in January and included major renovations in many areas of the 65,748-s.f. store, with various new additions in response to changing customer needs.

New décor and fixtures in all departments, including meat, produce, bakery and an expanded cheese and olive bar, showcase new products. Customers will notice new exterior signage as the entire facility has been upgraded. An upgraded pizza shop, made-to-order sub and Panini station, fish and chips plus other fried seafood and freshly prepared hot food bar have been installed to further enhance the store’s lineup of prepared meals, along with an on-site sushi chef. The meat department has installed a new butcher shop with an expanded variety of natural products. The produce department was enhanced in every category. Also available are many freshly made “Quick & Easy Meals,” selections that can be easily prepared at home.

The upgraded sales floor features the all-new Living Well Eating Smart section, which offers organic, natural and gluten-free products in grocery, health and beauty, dairy and frozen foods, along with freshly ground nut butters and an ample selection of bulk dry foods. Big Y continues its focus on supporting local partners like Mystic Syrup from Turkey Woods Farms in Mystic, and local beer from Outer Light Brewing in Groton.

Store Director Ray Lathrop continues to manage this store. Lathrop has been with Big Y since 1986, when he started as a dairy manager in the Norwich store. He was promoted to store director and assigned to the Norwich location in July of 2010, before transferring to Old Lyme later that year and then to Killingly, Mystic and Old Saybrook before being assigned to Groton in October 2017.

Big Y Foods operates 80 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, including 70 supermarkets, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors and nine Big Y Express gas and convenience locations and employs more than 11,000 employees.
