Sheetz has named Nathan Boyle of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as its 2019 Sheetz Family Award of Excellence winner.
Awarded on June 7, during the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games, Boyle was honored due to his distinguished sportsmanship and perseverance throughout the games.
The Sheetz Family Award of Excellence was created to capture the great sporting moments that distinguish the athletes at the Summer Games. The award recognizes the athlete whose determination and effort can only be understood by the power of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and inspire greatness. It distinguishes the athletes who may not win, but whose courage, sportsmanship, effort and determination is award-winning.
Boyle was nominated by several coaches, including his own. In recommending him for this award, they referred to him as a “gentle giant” with an infectious smile and a presence that puts everyone in a better mood. Boyle participates in softball and even sits with the opposing team when he is not playing, just to cheer them on. A few years ago, he gave up a hard-earned medal to another athlete who was unable to compete due to a paperwork mix-up. This act of kindness served to comfort the upset teammate.
“We were simply inspired by Nathan’s dedication to teamwork and by how respected he is by the coaches and teams he competes against,” said Sheetz Public Relations Manager Nick Ruffner. “At Sheetz, we are deeply committed to supporting the communities we serve. We are proud to stand beside our partners at the Special Olympics as they continue to transform lives through the joy of sport, teamwork and friendship.”
The winner of the Sheetz Family Award of Excellence was selected by a team of Sheetz employees from applications submitted by delegation leaders and coaches. All nominees remained anonymous during the selection process.
