Food Giant, Foodland Stores Celebrating Moon Landing With Big Sale

Eight Food Giant and Foodland stores in the Birmingham, Alabama, market are holding Moonlight Madness sales Friday and Saturday, July 19-20, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of U.S. astronauts landing on the moon, Wade Payne, director of retail operations for the stores, tells The Shelby Report.

The actual landing was July 20, “so it was a perfect tie-in,” Payne says.

Payne said the stores have enjoyed decorating for the space-themed sale, and associates will be dressing up as well. The stores are engaged in good-natured competition, he said.

The participating stores are the Food Giant stores in Pinson, Hueytown, Center Point, Leeds and Adamsville; the Foodlands in Gardendale and Montevallo; and the Highlander Foodland in Hueytown.

Shoppers should be inspired to come to the stores for several reasons, including giveaways, product sampling, contests and kids’ photo opportunities. They also will find some mega-deals; there are products that will be sold for 19 cents and 69 cents to commemorate the landing in 1969.

Payne was behind the advertisements for the sale, which include some space humor. Cherie Graves, who is in the advertising department at Mitchell Grocery Corp., the stores’ wholesaler, put together the ad layout.

Advertising spots are airing on local radio stations Talk99.5 and WJOX, and a radio remote will take place while the sale is going on.

The sale takes place 4 p.m. to closing both days.
