Grand Rapids, Michigan-based SpartanNash has been named among the nation’s 2020 Military Friendly Employers, earning bronze distinction. The annual list is compiled by Viqtory, whose mission is to provide veterans and their spouses with the finest choices for employment opportunities.

“We are proud to once again be named a Military Friendly Employer, because we recognize the tremendous service and sacrifice our military families have made on behalf of our country, and we know the value these men and women bring to SpartanNash,” EVP and Chief Human Resources and Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer Yvonne Trupiano said. “One of our company’s core values is patriotism, and we understand the benefit of hiring and retaining those who served our country and the skills and experience they bring to the table.”

This is the second year in a row SpartanNash has been named a Military Friendly Employer.

As a distributor of grocery products to U.S. military commissaries and exchanges around the world, SpartanNash currently employs more than 700 military veterans, in addition to reservists, National Guardsmen and Blue and Gold Star family members throughout the company. In 2018, 5 percent of all SpartanNash hires across its corporate retail, distribution, military and food processing business segments identified themselves as veterans.

SpartanNash also offers an employee resource group, SNVETS, which focuses on supporting, networking, volunteering, educating, training and serving military associates, their families and veterans in the community. In 2018, SNVETS coordinated welcome home celebrations for associates, a flag signing and care packages for deployed troops, SpartanNash Challenge coin presentations to more than 700 veteran associates and a holiday gift drive for veterans yielding more than three pallets of donated items.

SpartanNash partners with GI Jobs, the West Michigan Veterans Coalition and others for outreach and recruitment efforts targeted to veterans and their family members. The company and its charitable giving arm, the SpartanNash Foundation, is also committed to supporting military heroes in their local communities, raising funds and awareness for a variety of nonprofit organizations that provide vital services to veterans and their families. SpartanNash associates also volunteered more than 57,000 hours in 2018, with many of their community service hours supporting VA hospitals, housing initiatives and educational support for service members’ children.
