SpartanNash Celebrates $1 Million Donated To Nonprofit Partners

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based SpartanNash recently celebrated a milestone through its Direct Your Dollars program—giving $1 million back to local schools, charities and other nonprofit organizations through the receipt-based program.

To celebrate the $1 million milestone, SpartanNash surprised Hastings Area Schools’ Southeastern Elementary School with an additional $2,500 donation on Oct. 15—on top of the $1,000 already earned through Direct Your Dollars.Direct Your Dollars logo

“What an amazing surprise for our school, our students and our teachers—and what an impact these Direct Your Dollars funds will make,” said Southeastern Elementary School Principal Dana Stein. “This money will allow us to go on fieldtrips, buy classroom supplies and so much more. Our teachers and our Parent Teacher Organization work so hard to make our students’ learning experience the best it can be, and this money will support those efforts in a really special way.”

To earn its $3,500 donation, Southeastern Elementary School in Hastings, Michigan, placed envelopes outside of each classroom, where students could collect their Family Fare receipts. The school also teamed up with Hastings Free Methodist Church and local businesses to collect receipts.

Since launching its Direct Your Dollars program in August 2016, SpartanNash has awarded more than 900 participating organizations with $1,000 donations through the receipt-based program.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have contributed $1 million back into our local communities through Direct Your Dollars,” said Meredith Gremel, VP of corporate affairs and communications. “It’s rewarding to see the ways these dollars have made an impact for participating organizations. Our company vision is to be a best-in-class business that feels local, where relationships matter—and this is truly a program that makes a local impact for everyone involved. From the store guests who save their receipts for their favorite nonprofit to the organizations who deploy these funds for key local programs and services, Direct Your Dollars is making a difference.”

The Direct Your Dollars program encourages customers to use their purchasing power to support local nonprofits by shopping at participating SpartanNash retail stores and fuel centers in eight states, including Family Fare, D&W Fresh Market, ValuLand, Forest Hills Foods, Ada Fresh Market and VG’s stores throughout Michigan. Store guests can then turn their receipts in to their favorite local charity, school or nonprofit.

Once the nonprofit organization has collected $150,000 in receipts from eligible sales, it can redeem them for a $1,000 donation from SpartanNash, to be used for computers, textbooks, field trips, athletic and band equipment, food and meal supplies and more.

All preschool and K-12 schools are eligible to participate, as well as school-sponsored groups and clubs. Faith-based and community service organizations are also eligible, as are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.
