Cardenas Markets will open its doors to serve the city of Whittier, California, and its surrounding communities in 2020. This new location marks its first store opening west of Pomona, as part of the retailer’s future expansion plans toward Los Angeles and Orange counties, which the company says include the best growth opportunities in the country for Cardenas Markets. Currently, most of its Southern California locations are in the Inland Empire.

“Our aggressive growth plan continues as we expand westward into the city of Whittier. It has been a long time coming and we are excited about bringing our Keep Life Flavorful design to the largest Hispanic market in the country,” said John L. Gomez, CEO of Cardenas Markets LLC.

This new Cardenas Market will be located at 11750 Whittier Boulevard, and is expected to open in May 2020. The store will occupy 34,642 s.f. of an existing retail site, formerly occupied by Stater Bros., and provide 120 new jobs.

The store will include the Cardenas produce department, in addition to a fully equipped Mexican kitchen with a complete view of the food preparation process and the flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine. The meat department will have new cases showcasing Mexican cuts of meat and seafood. The Whittier store will offer a coffee bar and food-to-go buffet, alongside other traditional amenities such as the panadería, with fresh-baked bread and pastry products. Plus, the store will offer its Nixtamal Tortilleria with scratch-made tortilla products.

Ontario, California-based Cardenas Markets operates a total of 59 stores (52 under Cardenas banner and seven stores under the Los Altos Ranch Market banner). Today, Cardenas is one of the largest Hispanic grocery chains in the country with stores in California, Nevada and Arizona.
