Smile Coffee Werks, based in Darien, Connecticut, has unveiled compostable coffee pods made from renewable raw materials with over a 12-month shelf life. The patented technology utilizes a plant based, BPA-free cup and top.
The pods are compatible with Nespresso classic style coffee makers, BPI-certified and commercially compostable in 12 weeks. Made from renewable plant-based products, the company says the pods are the first carbon neutral, single step disposal product to hit the market. Smile Coffee Werks is available for purchase at SmileCoffeeWerks.com in compatible 100 perfect Arabica Espresso pods (24 count, $15.99). Smile plans to unveil Keurig compatible K-Cups in spring 2020.
“Single serve coffee is hugely popular and convenient but creates tremendous waste to our environment,” said Michael Sands, co-founder of Smile Coffee Werks. “Coffee consumers can now purchase commercially compostable products, a guilt-free way to enjoy your daily cup of joe.”
Smile Coffee Werks, a brand of Smile Beverage Werks, PBC, develops and manufactures responsibly sourced, commercially compostable single use coffee pods. Developed by serial entrepreneur Michael Sands and green construction expert Frank Schuster, Smile Coffee Werks produces commercially compostable, BPI certified Nespresso compatible pods that do not require any additional film for shelf life or separation of lid, filter and grounds for disposal.
