TAFB Brings Multi-Faceted Approach To Fighting Hunger

Fort Worth, Texas-based Tarrant Area Food Bank will participate in Feeding America’s 12th annual Hunger Action Month during the month of September, an initiative started by Feeding America to get the nation invested in fighting hunger by actively taking a stand against it. For TAFB, this looks slightly different this year, as the ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue.

TAFB has distributed more than 33 million nutritious meals since October 2019, with nearly 19 million of those meals being distributed since COVID-19 began (early March).

“With the increased need that our 13 counties are facing, the importance of strong community involvement during Hunger Action Month cannot be overstated,” said TAFB President and CEO Julie Butner. “Your participation will allow us to put food back into the community where it belongs, to those who need it most.”

Here are the three ways to get involved:

  • Donate food: After a five month hiatus, TAFB is once again accepting food donations from individuals, with an emphasis on easy-to-make foods for kids at home participating in online school or adults who are homebound. These foods include: breakfast cereals, peanut butter, tuna, mac and cheese and pop-top soups. United Way of Tarrant County recently joined the fight against hunger in this way, by encouraging their supporters to donate food to TAFB.
  • Donate funds: Along with food donations, September brings one of the largest fundraising days of the year for non-profits across the Metroplex: North Texas Giving Day. On Sept. 17, members of the public can participate in Hunger Action Month by placing their North Texas Giving Day donation to TAFB.
  • Donate time: One of TAFB’s most exciting recent developments has been the establishment of the Mega Mobile Market, a now weekly mega distribution event which will be held every Friday through November at Herman Clark Stadium in Fort Worth.

Although TAFB isn’t accepting volunteers at TAFB’s Distribution Center, volunteers are needed to help all mobile events, especially the Mega Mobile Markets, run effectively. Those who have traditionally celebrated Hunger Action Month by volunteering with TAFB in any form are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.
