As part of its mission to feed families and enrich lives, FMI – The Food Industry Association and the Kellogg Co. have donated more than 13,000 servings of cereal to the St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix. This was an initiative of the virtual FMI Midwinter Executive Conference, for which Phoenix was the live event’s original location.

“With an increased interest on staying healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic, food retailers and suppliers continue to be key partners for health and well-being in the communities they serve for employees and customers alike,” said Krystal Register, MS, RDN, LDN, FMI director of health and well-being.

During the online event session titled, “Offense is Your Best Defense,” FMI and Kellogg focused on overall health and well-being initiatives and highlighted “power play” examples with executive leadership support from: Northgate Gonzalez Market, K-VA-T Food City, Publix, Kroger, Wakefern and FMI. As registered dietitians, Register and Sarah Ludmer, Kellogg Co. senior director of well-being and regulatory affairs, challenged food industry executives to explore ideas to leverage food for health with a purpose in their communities, with their employees, their customers and ultimately for themselves personally.

Kellogg offered to donate 150 servings of cereal per person who attended its sponsored session at the FMI Midwinter Executive Conference,” said Ludmer. “It’s all part of our commitment to nourishing our neighbors and ensuring access to food for those that need it most.”

St. Mary’s Food Bank is part of Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization.

“The partnership between FMI and Feeding America remains critically important, and we are grateful for the good will among so many great partners all along the food supply chain like the Kellogg Company,” Register said.

The grocery industry has a long history of supporting local food banks through Feeding America and other organizations across the country. In 2020, the grocery industry was responsible for donating 1.5 billion meals to Feeding America.

As the food industry association, FMI works with and on behalf of the entire industry to advance a safer, healthier and more efficient consumer food supply chain. FMI brings together a wide range of members across the value chain – from retailers that sell to consumers, to producers that supply food and other products, as well as the wide variety of companies providing critical services — to amplify the collective work of the industry.
