Mind Blown, Atlantic Sea Farms Announce Partnership

Mind Blown

Gwynn’s Island, Virginia-based Mind Blown by The Plant Based Seafood Co. will be using kelp from Atlantic Sea Farms, a regenerative kelp aquaculture company, in select products.

Atlantic Sea Farms kelp will be added to the Mind Blown Dusted Shrimp and Mind Blown Dusted Scallops beginning in mid-October. Mind Blown Crab Cakes will feature Atlantic Sea Farms kelp beginning in 2023. The products will be available at all Sprouts Farmers Markets locations.

Headquartered in Biddeford, Maine, Atlantic Sea Farms is a women-led business that offers award-winning, nutrient-dense, regeneratively-grown fresh, dried and fermented kelp products, while actively mitigating effects of climate change, boosting Maine’s coastal economies and preserving vital local working waterfront communities.

“We’re thrilled to work with Monica and her team on these outstanding new products,” said Atlantic Sea Farms Founder Bri Warner. “We are two women-run companies working tirelessly to help diversify coastal incomes, improve our food system and restore our oceans in the face of climate change. In my view, it doesn’t get much more transformative than that.”

Monica Talbert, Mind Blown co-founder and CEO, agreed, “With my deep roots in the Chesapeake Bay, and lifelong ties to its fishermen, my mind was blown when I was introduced to Atlantic Sea Farms and was incredibly inspired by the mission of Bri Warner and her team. We’ve always thought ‘anything seafood can do, Mind Blown can do.’ Now that we’re incorporating this incredible ingredient straight from the waters of Maine, it’s more true now than ever.”

Carbon negative and hyper-efficient, kelp is a regenerative, zero-input crop that requires no fertilizer, pesticides, feeds, arable land or fresh water. Since the company’s first harvest, Atlantic Sea Farms partner farms have removed more than 260,000 pounds of carbon from local Maine waters, while supporting partner fisherman farmers.

One of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, kelp has naturally high levels of iodine, antioxidants, potassium, iron and folic acid. It also boasts the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food. According to a Global Market Insights Report, the commercial seaweed market is projected to reach $85 billion by 2026. Meanwhile, the global plant-based seafood market is expected to exhibit a compounded annual growth rate of 30.4 percent during 2022-27.
