Jim Nilsson
Jim Nilsson Jr. is known for his work as an independent grocer and is well respected among his peers.
Geissler’s has a rich history of success and growth as a family-owned business. Geissler’s was crowned one of the IGA’s top supermarkets in the world in 2007.
Mr. Nilsson was born Dec. 22, 1952, in Hartford Conn., to James and Mary Nilsson, and he grew up in the family business. He is a third-generation grocery retailer who, with his siblings, owns seven IGA supermarkets. The eldest of four, Mr. Nilsson began his grocery career at 10 years old, working with his grandfather, Adolph Geissler.
He attended East Windsor Public Schools before heading off to the New York Military Academy in Cornwall, N.Y., for the completion of high school and went on to attend Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., to obtain a bachelor of science degree. He returned to the family business in 1974.
Mr. Nilsson has been honored by Connecticut Food Association as Person of the Year and Hall of Fame Inductee as well as the IGA International Retailer of the Year.
