In a letter shared with The Shelby Report, The Raley’s Companies has promoted Steve Mayer as president of Chandler, Arizona-based Bashas’ Operating Company.
In his new position, Mayer will lead the Bashas’ organization in Arizona and New Mexico, including all store and distribution center operations, as well as sales and merchandising. He will continue to report to Keith Knopf, president and CEO of The Raley’s Companies, and serve on the enterprise leadership team.
“It is an honor to be bestowed with the responsibility of shepherding the legacy of Bashas’ into the future. It is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. Our team members continue to amaze me with their ingenuity, compassion and commitment to serving our guests, supporting each other and our communities. I am grateful for the opportunity and am enthusiastic about what lies ahead for Bashas’ as well as The Raley’s Companies,” Mayer said.
He is a veteran of the industry and joined Bashas’ leadership team in 2020. Most recently, Mayer served as Bashas’ chief operating officer.
Mayer came to Bashas’ Family of Stores from Schnucks Markets, where he progressed to the role of chief merchant and a member of the executive strategy team after serving as group VP of produce, floral and deli. He also served in executive roles at Meijer Corporation, Bi-Lo, Ahold USA and Flavor 1st, where he was appointed the company’s president.

Mayer comes into his new role surrounded by the Bashas’ executive team, including Johnny Basha, Michael Basha, Ralph Woodward, Ashley Shick and Sabrina Dominquez, along with the The Raley’s Companies shared services leaders – all of whom will work together, alongside all team members, to ensure continued focus and success.
