New Bay Area Safeway Stores Debuting Wednesday

Last updated on September 14th, 2016 at 12:15 pm

Safeway, a division of Albertsons Cos., will open three new stores across the Bay Area on Wednesday. The grand openings include: Pacifica, The Fairmont Shopping Center; Oakland, The Ridge Shopping Center; and Walnut Creek, The Orchards at Walnut Creek.

“We are excited to open three new stores to meet the needs of our customers and create new jobs in the Bay Area. These new stores will give customers new local, fresh and organic options,” said Tom Schwilke, president of Safeway Northern California.

Highlights of the new Safeway stores include:

Local items

Safeway offers thousands of local items throughout the store. These products are marked with a “Local” tag on the shelf so they are easy to find. The company says it has partnered with local produce growers and Cal-Organic Farms and carry a broad selection across the entire store, including local favorites like Clover Stornetta Dairy Farms from Petaluma, free-range Rocky Chicken from Sonoma County and Three Twins Ice Cream, also from Petaluma.

Organic offerings

Safeway offers more than 150 fresh organic produce items every day. The company says it has thousands of organic choices throughout the store, including hundreds of products from the Safeway-exclusive USDA-certified organic brand O Organics.

USDA Choice Quality Beef, Prime and Grass Fed Beef

Safeway’s full-service butcher block features a variety of USDA Choice quality beef cuts, a more premium cut of meat. It is aged, guaranteed tender and has more marbling for juiciness and flavor, the grocer says. The company’s butchers are on hand to discuss custom cuts, cooking techniques and can cut and prepare anything to order.

Full-service deli

Safeway offers an extensive line of Boar’s Head deli meat and cheeses as well as a wide range of freshly prepared meals, including whole roasted chickens; fresh hand-battered fried chicken; and fresh sushi. The grocer’s deli staff will make made-to-order sandwiches using freshly baked bread. The grocer says it also has many ready-to-serve options ranging from hot or cold soup to green salads and “grab-and-go” meals.

Beer, wine and liquor

The wine selection includes hundreds of varietals, including local options from the South Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains. Stores also offer an assortment of liquor, as well as craft and locally brewed beers. Shoppers who purchase any six bottles of wine and/or liquor will save an additional 10 percent every day.

Full-service floral designers

Safeway offers an assortment of fresh flowers, blooming plants and home décor items, and in-store floral designers are able to assist in selections.

Grocery delivery services

Safeway’s grocery delivery program offers one-hour delivery windows, a “Shop By History” feature that saves all previously purchased items for easy repeat purchasing and free delivery on the first order.

The Oakland and Walnut Creek stores also have a pharmacy, Starbucks and large selection of bulk foods.

In celebration of the store openings, six Bay Area nonprofit organizations will be presented with a $2,500 charitable contribution from The Safeway Foundation during the store opening festivities on Sept. 14-15. A brief presentation will take place in the floral department of each store with Safeway management, business and community leaders in attendance.
