Southeastern Grocery Exec Marvin Young Dies

Marvin Young, a well-known grocery industry executive in the Southeast, has passed away. Mr. Young died after suffering a massive heart attack while attending a trade show in Chicago on Tuesday.

Mr. Young served as director of center store for Rouses Markets in Louisiana, a position he took in March. Prior to this role, Mr. Young was AVP of non-perishables for Belle Foods in Birmingham. He also had held executive roles at Bruno’s, Piggly Wiggly Southern, Southern Family Markets and BI-LO.

“Mr. Marvin was a true gentleman and a valued team member,” says Steve Galtier, director of human resources at Rouses. “He will be sadly missed.”

Mr. Young also served on the board of the Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) for 14 years. He was the association chairman in 2002 and served on every association committee, including serving as convention committee chairman. In 2001, he was awarded the AGA Retailer of the Year Award by his peers in the grocery industry.

“He was a tremendous supporter of our association, and he will be greatly missed by the entire industry,” says Ellie Smotherman Taylor, president of AGA.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 4650 Preserve Pkwy., in Hoover, Ala. Burial will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the following charities:

• Spring Valley School, P.O. Box 131431, Birmingham, AL 35213.
