The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Food Lion with its Energy Star award for the 13th consecutive time for the grocer’s continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency.

“We are honored to receive the Energy Star Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Award for the 13th year,” said Susan Sollenberger, director of energy, maintenance and equipment purchasing at Food Lion. “Food Lion has focused on numerous sustainability initiatives for more than a decade, such as energy conservation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout our 10-state footprint and reducing our energy consumption by more than 30 percent since 2000.”

The 2014 Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding leadership year after year. These winners have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals and employing innovative energy efficiency approaches.

These awards recognize ongoing leadership across the Energy Star program, including energy efficient products, services, new homes and buildings in the commercial, industrial and public sectors. Winners are selected from the nearly 20,000 organizations that participate in the Energy Star program.

“Food Lion has earned EPA’s highest Energy Star award—the 2014 Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Award—because of their unwavering commitment to helping consumers become increasingly more energy efficient,” said EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe.

The 2014 Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a variety of organizations to recognize their contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy efficiency.
